Campground Automation Systems
Campground Automation
Systems’ Sunrise software:
A new day for campgrounds

Nashville-based Campground Automation
Systems offers the customizable Sunrise
system to fully automate campgrounds of
all types and sizes. Sunrise from CAS uses
advanced technology to decrease costs and
increase efficiency for campgrounds, while also
providing increased convenience to campers.
Sunrise provides online reservations, automated
check-in and payment, automated campsite
utilities management and remote campground
monitoring and reporting.
The Campground Automation Systems story
begins with Tyler Duffy, an experienced
engineer with an entrepreneurial spirit. Tyler
had developed a sophisticated drill rig for his
brother’s seismic drilling operation. While
staying for several months at a remote,
unattended campground for a drilling job, Tyler
noticed countless campers coming and going,
apparently without paying. The idea was born to
develop a self-service kiosk for the recreational
camping industry.
At an after-church dinner sometime later, Tyler
discussed his idea with Jon Sharp, then an
independent software developer and embedded
systems engineer. Six months later, the duo had
developed a complete hardware and software
solution: a rugged, outdoor kiosk, an innovative
wireless utility control unit and advanced, easyto-
use software.
Sunrise is a full-featured, real-time reservation
and campground management system,
providing powerful front-desk/back-office
management and an unprecedented online
reservation experience. Sunrise is flexible,
allowing your custom business rules to be
expressed in your language. Built using modern
technologies, Sunrise is easy to use.
The company debuted the system at the 2007
ARVC/KOA InSites Expo in Phoenix, Ariz. The
immediate interest was exciting and the positive
feedback set in motion a road map of steady
improvements to the system. Early adopters
gave CAS the opportunity to aggressively
pursue advanced features. Subsequent industry
events saw more product introductions.
“We introduced several significant new features
at the 2011 ARVC InSites convention, including
online group reservations, payment tokenization
and live QuickBooks integration,” said Tyler
Duffy, president of Campground Automation
Systems. “In the spring, we anticipate rolling out
expanded accounting and billing features.”
Tyler explained that every part of Sunrise is
designed to be simple and intuitive for the user.
“Things work the way you think they should!
Also, Sunrise uses cutting-edge technology,
including cloud computing, that makes it
exceptionally reliable and flexible. The system
is equally adept at handling large parks with
complex business rules and small parks with
straight-forward processes. We do not ask
campgrounds to adapt their processes to our
software. Rather, our software can adapt to
virtually any business model.”
CAS strives to provide exceptional customer
support. “Everyone makes the claim, but our
customers will testify that we provide fantastic
support for Sunrise,” Tyler explained. “We are
committed to being responsive, and Sunrise’s
flexibility makes that possible in ways other
software can’t replicate.”
“Sunrise is working out great for us, and the
customer support from Tyler with Campground
Automation is fantastic,” said Richard Kellerman
with Gettysburg Battlefield Resort. “Our needs
were very complicated, and the system has
been able to fully meet them. We receive
frequent updates with new features and are very
happy with the system and the service.”
SunriseReservations.com is CAS’ guest-facing
website that provides real-time inventory, an
interactive campground map, online payment
and true reservations through a streamlined
intuitive interface. Sunrise is a fully integrated
system for powerful reservation management
with online reservations baked in. With Sunrise,
online reservations are not an afterthought and
there is no “syncing” of data as a result.
“We continue to bring new campgrounds onto
the system all the time,” said Tyler. “Our growth
is accelerating rapidly. Recent additions to
our customer base include Travel Resorts
of America and Normandy Farms Family
Campground. We were also recently chosen
as the official software provider for Camping in
Ontario (campinginontario.com), an association
of about 400 private campgrounds in Canada.”
Rapid growth has brought the need for new
personnel. The CAS family has expanded to
meet customers’ needs, and Tyler told us the
company couldn’t be more proud of its staff.
He said every member is passionate about
technology and works tirelessly to deliver
exceptional solutions.
“Innovation is core to who we are,” Tyler
continued. “What began as an entrepreneurial
idea to meet the needs of unattended parks has
expanded to cover parks of all shapes and sizes.
As we see it, the Campground Automation story
has just begun. We are excited about the growth
we are experiencing and look forward to new
opportunities as we continue to innovate.”
